Director of Telecommunications,
As Hawaiian Electric’s Director of Telecommunications, Rodney Chong oversees the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of the telecommunications infrastructure for Hawaiian Electric, Maui Electric, and Hawaiʻi Electric Light.
Rodney began his career in the utility business in 1990, just a month after graduating from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa with a B.S. in electrical engineering. He joined Hawaiian Electric’s Engineering Department in 1991 as a substation engineer and served in numerous and diverse roles including Project Manager, Principal Environmental Scientist, Director of Energy Procurement, Manager of Renewable Acquisition, Director of Grid Modernization, and in 2019 a brief role as the Vice President of Energy Delivery.
Born and raised in Honolulu, Rodney is a graduate of the University of Hawaiʻi Mānoa. He currently serves on the board of the Engineering Alumni Association of UH and on the board of Kupu, a nonprofit whose mission is to provide hands-on environmental and sustainability learning opportunities for Hawaiʻi’s youth.
Rodney is a registered professional electrical engineer (PE) in Hawaiʻi, and a certified project management professional (PMP).
